We are very aware that some people believe our crowdfunding campaign was a scam. However, it is 100% real and we’re even including pictures of our progress here as proof. Numerous backers have actually visited our new location in person already and have seen all of our hard work with their own eyes. We actually understand why some people thought this was a scam – simply put, the prices we charged for these plant rewards was LESS THAN WE BUY THEM FOR! That alone makes it seem like our project was impossible. For example, we offered variegated Adansonii for $790, but we actually had to buy these plants for $2,000 – $3,000 EACH! So how can we do that and not lose money? The answer is propagation. From the beginning of this campaign, it was our intention to propagate and produce each plant reward to be able to provide those plants for a much cheaper price than normal (even for wholesale buyers). This requires a lot of growing space, money and time – which is why the crowdfunding campaign was necessary to accomplish this goal and also why the plant rewards were estimated to take more than 6 months from the start of the campaign. For certain plants, such as Philodendron Pink Princess, we have actually propagated 4-5 times more plants than we need to ensure that all backers receiving this reward will get a plant with decent variegation. All of these logistics are things that the backers really never get to see, but it will be obvious once everyone receives their plant rewards. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support throughout this project, and we honestly can’t wait to send your plants.
Since we did not meet our original fundraising goal, we had to slightly adjust our plans to successfully pull off this project. Despite these changes and delays, we are still going to start shipping some of the plant rewards in July 2020 as originally planned – as originally stated on our crowdfunding project, some plants are going to take a bit longer to grow to the proper sizes.
We were able to secure a property in Naples, Florida starting on March 9, 2020 – this was slightly longer than we wanted but really only by a few weeks. Construction on our three new shade houses was completed by June 2020, which was also a few weeks behind schedule (although the first shade house was finished back in April and the second in May). The actual move from Simpsonville, SC to Naples, FL was about 800 miles one-way and required three separate round-trips with a 26ft diesel truck to complete the move.
Beyond moving, there were two other major factors that have affected the timeline for the Grow Eden Project – drastically increasing plant prices and the coronavirus pandemic. Almost immediately after our crowdfunding campaign, we noticed that at least half of the plants we offered were skyrocketing in price. Between November when we started the campaign and March, many of these plant prices increased by 300-500%. Needless to say, this complicated things on our end to obtain the necessary number of each plant to produce the crowdfunding rewards. We have obtained all of the plants we need, but it took more time and a lot more money than originally planned. On top of the increasing prices, the coronavirus pandemic hit immediately after we got the keys to our new nursery location. We had obtained all of the plants we needed by that time, but we still needed shade house construction on the property. Unfortunately, obtaining supplies and work from certain third-party companies became extremely difficult almost overnight. This definitely slowed down our progress by at least a few weeks, but we were also able to overcome all of these problems in the end.
The original shipping date that we set to start shipping plant rewards for the Grow Eden Project was by the end of July 2020. Even though we experienced some unforeseen delays with this project, we are still on track to start shipping some of the reward plants by the end of July. However, there are a few types of plants that we offered that are taking longer to grow and these particular plants will still need a couple more months to reach the sizes we want to ship.
