Unlike most Aroids that come from the tropical Americas, Alocasia is native to Asia and Australia. These plants occur in tropical areas, but there are some that are found in subtropical regions too (USDA Zones 7-11). Around 80 species have been described. Alocasias are one type of plant that is commonly called Elephant Ears, but there are other genera like Colocasia that are also called Elephant Ear.
