Anthurium

The biggest genus in the Araceae family is the Anthuriums with more than a thousand species described and likely many more still undiscovered. These plants are native to the tropics of Central America, South America and the West Indies, but they can be found in a wide variety of natural habitats.

In general, Anthuriums like warm and humid conditions, but they can also suffer if they get too hot, especially when humidity is low. Many of them like bright light but not direct sun, so they’re very tolerant being grown as a houseplant. Similar to many other Aroids, the Anthurium family is comprised of a lot of epiphytic species. As a result, they appreciate good air movement and a lose, well-draining soil that retains some moisture but doesn’t stay waterlogged. A mixture of orchid bark, perlite and peat works well, especially when a time-release fertilizer is added twice a year.

Since there are more than 1,000 Anthurium species, there are a wide variety of different types. The flower bouquet industry uses a lot of Anthurium flowers from species that are rather plain except for their flowers. Then there are much more spectacular species that have impressive foliage like regale, magnificum and warocqueanum that grow very large leaves that are dark green with beautifully contrasting white veins. EdenCPs only grows and sells the more impressive foliage varieties of these plants.
